Last week, I had the opportunity to look behind the scenes of the Radiation Oncology Department at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. It will stand out as one of the few centers in the country with a full range of treatment options when it introduces proton beam therapy to the Valley early next year. This form of therapy uses spot scanning to run streams of protons back and forth through a tumor, closely targeting the cancer and sparing healthy tissue.
The Proton Beam Therapy Program and Cancer Center are housed in the new Mayo building opening in February. The new services will create more than 130 jobs when they become operational next year.
